This Wednesday, Claremont McKenna College welcomes Thomas C. Leppert ’77 for his talk “Contrasting Leadership in Public and Private Sectors.” His visit is jointly sponsored by the Kravis Leadership Institute, the Robert Day School, and the Rose Institute of State and Local Government. Currently serving as the CEO of Kaplan, Inc., an education company known for its various test prep materials and training programs, Leppert brings a deep knowledge of the private sector. He was the Chairman and CEO of the Turner Corporation, the nation’s largest general building company, from 1999 to 2006, and held a position the Board of Directors of Washington Mutual from 2005 to 2009. Beyond this, he has experience in many other industries.
Leppert also has extensive public sector experience. In 2007, he was elected as Mayor of Dallas, Texas and served until 2011. During his tenure, he led efforts to reduce crime, increase trade connections with Mexico and China, enact ethics reform, and increase property taxes in an effort to balance the city’s budget. Leppert was appointed a White House Fellow in 1984 under President Ronald Reagan and was later appointed to the White House Fellows Commission by President George W. Bush.
Leppert’s talk will be on Wednesday, September 24, with a luncheon at 11:30 a.m., at the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum. The talk, open to the public, will begin at 12:00 p.m.
