One summer a bunch of us stayed in town and worked at Rose. Most of us lived in a house on 6th Street that the college owned. Not much happens in Claremont in the summer, and none of us were capable cooks, so we were thrilled when we heard one of the trustees (not Edessa) was coming for a tour and we would all have lunch at the Atheneum. Well, during the tour the trustee told Tom (Hofeller) how much she admired the owners of In-and-Out, so he got the idea to surprise her with a banquet of In-and-Out burgers, fries, and shakes. Us poor students were deeply disappointed because that’s what we ate most days. But it was funny to see the burgers and fries served on silver platters.
