From Tom Chorneau’s San Francisco Chronicle article on the recent Field Poll revealing that Prop. 93 is losing support:
Political experts said that as voters became more aware of the measure and its implications, the less they liked it.”They smelled a rat,” said Jack Pitney, a professor of government and politics at Claremont McKenna College. “I think when it comes to term limits, voters are alert to anything that might be perceived as a political trick, and I think there are lots of voters who see Proposition 93 as a bait and switch.”
From Steven Harmon’s article in the San Jose Mercury News:
“A debate on term limits would have been very enlightening for the general public, but proponents figured they can’t change the public’s mind about term limits,” said Jack Pitney, government professor at Claremont McKenna College. “And opponents felt they didn’t really need to engage the merits of the issue.”
Dan Weintraub’s thoughts are here.
Also in Prop. 93 news, Jim Sanders has a post at Capitol Alert on the Governor and Gray Davis’ appearance together in support of Proposition 93 today. One wonders if this event foreshadows some appearances together on behalf of redistricting reform. Maybe Tim Herdt was right.
