From Laura Kurtzman’s Associated Press article, as published in the San Jose Mercury News:
Jack Pitney, a political science professor at Claremont McKenna College, said conservative California is still fertile ground for Mike Huckabee, the former Baptist preacher and Arkansas governor who has surged in Iowa and South Carolina on a shoestring operation.Giuliani has led all year in polls of California Republicans. But Huckabee came out of nowhere in December to run roughly equal with Romney. If Huckabee survives until Feb. 5, Pitney said, Giuliani will only stand a chance of winning big in California if a third candidate, such as Romney, is still viable.”In a one-to-one contest, it would be hard for Giuliani to defeat a social conservative,” Pitney said. “But in a divided field, with Romney, he could win in a plurality.”
