The California Democratic party recently decided that it will be officially against the California Voters First Initiative that proposes changes to how districts are created in California.
The California Democratic Party, ratifying yesterday’s vote by its Resolutions Committee, is now officially on record against it.
The CDP’s E-Board defeated it by a 9-1 margin at its meeting today in San Francisco. Speakers noted that it gives disproportionate representation to Republicans, is being primarily funded by partisan Republicans, and would cause the loss of many legislative seats now held by African-Americans and Latinos because of its criteria.
The initiative is backed by the governor to the tune of $2.6 Million and recently received the backing of the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation. The initiative puts drawing the lines in the hands of a 14 member independent redistricting committee and has supporters from disparate groups including Common Cause, the League of Women Voters, Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, California Republican Assembley, ACLU of Southern California, and the AARP. It is unclear what effect the Democrats’ position will have on California voter’s opinion in November.
