The following article is from our Fall, 2007 newsletter:
Student research assistants have returned to the Rose again this year after another exciting summer of internships and experiences. Six Rose students spent the summer in Washington, D.C. working at internships ranging from the Center for American Progress to the State Department.
Senior Colin McDonell spent his summer in D.C. interning for the National Taxpayers Union Foundation, a non-profit think tank focusing on fiscal policy. Colin also spent two weeks at the beginning of summer on a trip to China with the Claremont Colleges Debate Union, during which he traveled to Beijing, Shanghai, and Xi’an.
Senior Nick Le Du’s Washington Internship was at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in the Office for Iraq Reconstruction. At USAID, Nick designed a domestic communications outreach strategy aimed at securing congressional budgetary support for the agency’s Iraq operations.
Sophomores Ilan Wurman and Abhi Nemani also worked in D.C. this past summer. Ilan interned for The Hill newspaper, where he reported on over two-dozen stories, and Abhi interned for the Center for American Progress, where he researched and wrote on current political issues.
Other Rose Research Assistants participated in internships abroad through the McKenna International Scholarship program. Junior Ritika Puri received a McKenna International grant to volunteer in a New Delhi slum where she tutored children in math and interviewed local residents. In her last month of work, she started a free health clinic that now sees fifteen patients per day five days a week. Sophomore Sophia Hall interned for UNICEF in Morocco, while Senior Meredith Stechbart stayed closer to home in the Eastern Sierra Nevada mountains, working at a Bureau of Land Management field site through the Roberts Environmental Center.
While a majority of returning students chose to pursue other opportunities this summer across the country and around the world, a small and dedicated team of students worked right here at the Institute. Students devoted much of their time this summer to the 2007 Kosmont-Rose-Institute Cost of Doing Business Survey. Research Assistants conducted a significantly more thorough update of key Kosmont cities and improved the accuracy of the survey’s analysis formulas.
This summer also witnessed the start of a massive survey project for the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC), a survey of 5,000 businesses in the County.
In September, the student managers and senior staff had the great pleasure of hiring ten new research assistants. Nine freshmen and one junior will round out a student staff of 33. In addition, Scripps senior Ann Harvey, who was hired to work at the Rose this summer, will be staying on for the fall to share her new expertise on the Kosmont-Rose Survey.
This fall promises to be a busy one at the Institute as the 2008 Kosmont Survey gets underway, along with continued work on the LAEDC Survey, a new industry analysis project for Southern California Edison, continued work on Professor Miller’s initiatives database, and a myriad of new projects on the horizon. This year promises to be an exciting one and we are looking forward to watching our sophomores, juniors and seniors take on new and exciting leadership roles. We also look forward to seeing our freshmen grow into their roles as research assistants carrying on the Rose’s tradition of excellence.
