Redistricting and the Courts in Wisconsin

From Mark Pitsch’s article in the Wisconsin State Journal:

The Legislature ‘s top Republican says the Wisconsin Supreme Court is exceeding its authority by drafting plans to rewrite the boundaries of voting districts.

The Supreme Court says it has to be ready to write legislative district maps in the event lawmakers can ‘t agree or the Legislature ‘s plan is challenged in court.

The redistricting committee has proposed that if lawmakers can ‘t agree on a redistricting plan, a panel of five appeals court judges would be appointed to map out new districts. The state Supreme Court would then review the map if there were to be a court challenge. That process would make state judges, rather than the federal courts, responsible for handling redistricting in the event of a legislative failure.
