Dan Lee’s article in the Press-Enterprise discusses the city council races in Moreno Valley. Lee describes how the Moreno Valley Taxpayers Association has spent $3,200 on slate mailers for candidates Molina and Hastings. Doug Johnson explains what slate mailers are and how they are used:
“Douglas Johnson, an elections expert at the Rose Institute for State and Local Government at Claremont McKenna College, said slate mailers are usually labeled “voter guides” that are mailed to prospective voters.
Generally, they have a high-profile candidate on the cover to catch people’s attention, while other candidates pay for the privilege to be listed or recommended to voters in the guide, he said by phone.”
