The City of San Luis Obispo operates on a Council-Mayor-Administrative Officer form of government. San Luis Obispo is governed by a city charter which an be changed or amended only with voter approval. Four Council Members are elected and serve four-year, staggered terms. The Mayor is also elected and serves a two-year term. The Mayor serves as an equal voting member of the Council along with the Council Members. Elections are held in November of even-numbered years. The City Council appoints the City Attorney and the City Manager. All other appointments are made by the City Manager.
