In a recent editorial, the Santa Cruz Sentinel endorsed the Voters First Initiative. The paper becomes one of a bunch of papers statewide that have endorsed the initiative including the San Jose Mercury News, Fresno Bee, the Torrance Daily Breeze, San Diego Union Tribune, LA Daily News, North County Times, Stockton Record, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, and the Lompoc Record.
The editorial noted the direct impact redistricting has had on the region in the past:
Santa Cruz County residents have suffered in another way — the last redistricting effort by legislators resulted in the loss of a local state Senate district. Democrats had nothing to lose since voters in this county are so overwhelmingly in their camp and now, with the nearly certain victory of Democrat Bill Monning in the 27th Assembly district, we face not having a legislator who lives here in Sacramento next January.
