Rose Fellow Doug Johnson on Competitive Local Primary Races

On March 12th, The San Bernardino Sun posted an article titled “California Republican Party announces endorsements picks Miller over Dutton”. The article discussed the Republican Party’s endorsement of longtime lawmaker Rep. Gary Miller the 31st Congressional District seat and the strong competition Miller continues to face from state Sen. Bob Dutton (R). The article also covers the lack of a GOP endorsement for the 8th Congressional District, a large area including most of the eastern end of San Bernardino County and extending northward into Inyo County.

Commenting on the highly competitive race for the 31st District seat, Rose Institute Fellow Doug Johnson noted that the race should prove to be hard-fought. “From the moment Miller jumped in, Dutton knew it was going to be his local organization against Miller’s larger resources – and this doesn’t change that,” Johnson stated.

Miller also commented on the lack of GOP endorsement for the 8th District, which includes a number of Republican candidates as well as former Republican Assemblyman Anthony Adams, who is running as an independent. Endorsements require a 2/3 vote from party membership, which is split by the number of Republicans entered in the race. “There are so many candidates in District 8 and with no incumbent, its not surprising that the party didn’t have the votes needed to endorse this one,” stated Johnson.
