Doug Johnson on Changing Political Climate in San Bernardino County

Normally a strong Republican county, in the presidential race 52 percent of the county vote in San Bernardino went to Obama. Yet Prop 8 passed with 67 percent of the vote. Johnson discusses San Bernardino County’s changing political landscape in Ryan Orr’s article in the Victorville Daily Press:

“’I think what that shows is that the Prop. 8 vote was Republicans joining with Latinos and African-Americans even though they may have split on partisan races,’ said Doug Johnson, a fellow with the Rose Institute of State and Local Government, in Claremont.”

Johnson said that there is no doubt San Bernardino County is in flux.

“The question is,” the Rose Institute fellow said, “will it go back to the old norm, or is this the new normal? It’s never been so interesting.”
