Gray Davis, the former governor of California, recently endorsed the California “Voters First” initiative that aims to place responsibility for redistricting with an independent commission. Gray Davis had this to say:
Everyone in Sacramento wants a safe-seat. However, safe-seats generally produce legislators who are less accountable to voters, not more. Under the current rules legislators pick their voters, and with this reform voters will once again pick their legislators…
Gray Davis’s endorsement comes as the California Democratic Party decided that it is officially against the initiative. It remains to be seen what degree of influence the recalled governor’s endorsement will have.
